What is tallow?
Tallow is derived from beef suet, the rich and nutrient-packed fat found around a cow’s kidneys. Known for its remarkable health benefits, it can be consumed or applied directly to the skin. Why is the consistency of my tallow different from my last order?
The consistency of our tallow may vary slightly from batch to batch (including color, texture, and scent) because we use natural ingredients.
Rest assured, we follow the same method and use the same high-quality ingredients for each batch. Since our tallow contains no stabilizers or additives, it can melt when exposed to heat.
When exposed to temperature fluctuations (such as during shipping or between seasons), you may notice a gritty texture. This does not affect the effectiveness of the product—it will melt between your fingers and blend smoothly upon application.
To maintain its best quality, store your whips and balms at room temperature in a cool, dark place. If your tallow does melt, it’s still perfectly usable—just give it a little time to return to its solid state!
How should I be storing my tallow?
To keep your tallow fresh, make sure to store it in a clean, dry container and avoid any moisture getting into it. Keep the lid tightly sealed and store it in a cool, dark place to prevent any unwanted bacteria or mold growth.
Water can cause tallow to spoil, mold, or go rancid because it introduces moisture into the product, creating an environment where bacteria, fungi, and mold can thrive. Tallow is naturally an oil-based product, and oils themselves don’t spoil as easily as water-based products. However, when water is introduced, it disrupts the natural preservation of the tallow, making it more susceptible to microbial growth. This is why it's important to avoid water exposure when using tallow products—such as dipping wet fingers into the jar or leaving it in damp conditions—because it can shorten the shelf life and compromise the quality of the tallow.
What is the expected shelf life of my tallow?
Tallow is best used within 12 months of opening. Keep it in a cool, dark place and keep away from direct sunlight or heat.
